A grade school in Frankford has launched a new running program this fall with the help of some local police officers.
Students from Frankford Friends will be able to run in the inaugural Walk/Run4Frankford 5k on Oct. 22 after members of the 15th Police District donated the money for the kids’ entry fees. Capt. Anthony Luca and Officers Matt Crossan and Michael Planita delivered the donation to Frankford Friends on Oct. 5.
Crossan is the community relations officer for the district. During a recent meeting of the Frankford Business and Professional Association, he learned that the kids had formed a new cross country running club and were trying to raise some seed money. Crossan told his colleagues in the district, who passed the hat and chipped in some cash.
According to Elizabeth Reynolds, who teaches, sixth, seventh and eighth grades at the small Quaker school, about 10 pupils began training last spring through the Students Run Philly Style nonprofit mentoring program. They had so much fun, they decided to start a cross country team for the fall. In addition to the Walk/Run4Frankford, the students hope to race other Friends schools in the region.
Frankford Friends serves children from kindergarten through eighth grade.
The Walk/Run4Frankford is a fundraiser for the business association. It will be held at Frankford Field, 1074 Dyre St. Registration begins at 8 a.m. The event starts at 9 a.m.
The cost is $25. ••
