Cops: Man assaults clerk, gets stabbed

A word to the wise: never punch the person who makes your sandwiches.

A hungry thief made that precise mistake last Saturday at about 1:40 a.m. as he allegedly tried to swipe a sandwich and other merchandise from the 7-eleven at 5231 Harbison Ave. without paying for them, said Lt. Dennis Rosenbaum of the Philadelphia Police Department’s Northeast Detectives.

When a woman employee, 46, confronted the crook, 24, at the door, he allegedly punched her several times. So she grabbed a pocket knife and stabbed him in the chest, Rosenbaum said.

Though the ham-and-cheese burglar ran away, he soon showed up in the emergency room at Aria Health-Frankford, where staff members called police due to the suspicious circumstances. The convenience store clerk had already called 911, so police quickly linked the wounded man to the robbery.

Authorities did not release information about the suspect, who remained hospitalized on Tuesday afternoon and had not been charged formally. His injuries are not considered life-threatening.

The store clerk suffered facial bruising and scratches but was not hospitalized. ••
