Two scam artists in a shiny new pickup truck swindled a 78-year-old woman out of $2,000 after convincing her she needed repairs to the roof of her Lawndale home last month, police say.

On April 20, the victim told police that two unknown men came to her home on the 600 block of Benner St., said they were roofers and convinced her that she needed the costly repairs. The woman allowed the men to drive her to her bank, where she withdrew cash for the job. Back at the victim’s home, she became suspicious and asked the men to return her money. But they fled in a white pickup eastbound on Benner Street.

The men were described as possibly Hispanic, 30 years old and traveling in a newer, white four-door Ford pickup truck with a short bed, tinted windows, silver wheel rims, a small orange light on the cab and a single-ladder rack on the passenger side.
