Carjacker sentenced to 20 years in prison

A police impersonator who used police lights, a badge and a gun to carjack three motorists on a Holmesburg street in 2012 was sentenced last week to serve 20 years, eight months, in federal prison.

Michael Green, 33, of Philadelphia, is already serving a separate 180-month federal sentence for an earlier drug trafficking conviction. U.S. District Judge R. Barclay Surrick ordered Green to serve a portion of his new sentence consecutively to the earlier one.

On Dec. 5, 2012, Green and an accomplice disguised themselves as police officers with police clothing, badges and guns. With flashing red and blue lights affixed to their Chevrolet Malibu, Green and his co-conspirator stopped three men in a Chevy Silverado pickup truck on the 4300 block of McMenamy St. The victims had just left a funeral.

Green and his accomplice identified themselves as cops, handcuffed the victims at gunpoint and forced them into the back seat of the truck. Green parked the Malibu on a nearby block of Hartel Avenue then rejoined the others in the Silverado, where he pistol-whipped the victims and threatened to kill them. As Green’s accomplice drove the truck, the victims escaped by jumping from the moving vehicle. One of the victims suffered a broken arm.

Police identified Green after recovering the Malibu and determining that Green had rented it in his own name. Green also had left his wallet and cell phone inside. A jury convicted him on July 23, 2014, of carjacking and using a firearm in a crime of violence. The U.S. Attorney’s Office did not disclose the status of Green’s suspected accomplice, whether he had been identified or arrested. ••
