About Colleen

I grew up in Conception Bay South — close enough to St. John’s to feel like a townie, far enough to know I wasn’t one. English degree at MUN, which is where most of us end up if we stay. And I stayed. I watched friends leave for Fort McMurray and Calgary and Toronto, and I understood why, but I couldn’t do it. This place gets under your skin in a way that’s hard to explain to people who haven’t been here. I work part-time at The Rooms doing social media and event copy, and I freelance for Downhome Magazine and The Overcast.

I know every restaurant on Water Street and Duckworth Street — the good ones, the tourist traps, and the ones that keep quietly doing excellent things without anyone writing about them. I hike the East Coast Trail on weekends, go to George Street for live music, and bake my nan’s toutons on Sunday mornings. I write about Newfoundland for people who actually want to know the place — not the postcard version, not the Come From Away version, but the real one.

Most articles about Newfoundland are about leaving. I write about staying — the restaurants that keep opening on Water Street, the musicians who keep playing at The Ship and Erin’s Pub, the trails that are still here every morning no matter what the economy does. I have strong opinions about fish and chips (Ches’s is fine but not the best, and I’ll argue about it). If it involves culture, food, or travel east of Halifax, I’ve probably already been there or I’m planning the trip.

What I Don’t Cover

Gambling, betting, or anything involving odds. I’m a culture and food writer, full stop. I don’t write about Toronto, Vancouver, or anywhere west of Halifax unless I’ve actually been there. I won’t do generic “things to do in Canada” listicles — I write specifically about Newfoundland for people who actually want to go, not people looking for a quick content fix.

The Personal Stuff

When I’m Not Writing

  • East Coast Trail hikes (Sugarloaf to Spout Path, preferably)
  • Live music on George Street (The Ship, Erin’s Pub)
  • Baking nan’s toutons on Sunday mornings
  • Strong opinions about fish and chips

Industry Pet Peeves

  • Travel writers who visit for three days and think they know the place
  • The assumption that nothing happens east of Halifax
  • Restaurants in St. John’s that cater to cruise ship tourists instead of locals
  • People who pronounce it “New-FOUND-land”

“Most articles about Newfoundland are about leaving. I write about staying — the restaurants that keep opening, the musicians who keep playing, the trails that are still here every morning. It’s a good place. More people should know that.”
