About Denise
After 22 years as an ER nurse in Las Vegas, I’ve seen both the fun side of gambling and what happens when it stops being fun. I’ve treated the tourist who had too much free champagne at the blackjack table and the local who lost his rent money chasing losses. Those experiences shaped how I think about gambling — it should be entertainment, not desperation.
I grew up in Bakersfield, California — a three-hour drive from Vegas. My parents would take us to a budget casino once or twice a year while we swam in the pool. Fifty bucks was the gambling budget, and when it was gone, it was gone. That discipline stuck with me.
Now I’m semi-retired and write about casino games from a real player’s perspective. I’m not a high roller or an advantage player. I’m someone who enjoys slots, video poker, and the occasional table game — always with a budget, always for fun. I also write about responsible gambling because I’ve seen what happens when people don’t have those guardrails.

What I Don’t Cover
Sports betting isn’t my thing — I don’t follow sports closely enough to have an opinion. High-stakes play and advantage techniques like card counting are also outside my lane. I write for recreational players who want to have fun without losing their shirts.
The Personal Stuff
When I’m Not Writing
- Hiking Red Rock Canyon
- Grandkids (three of them, all under 10)
- Book club with other retired nurses
- Trying every new restaurant on Fremont Street
Industry Pet Peeves
- Casinos that removed low-limit tables
- “Systems” that promise guaranteed wins
- Apps that make it too easy to reload
- People who judge recreational gamblers
“The house always has an edge — that’s not a secret. The secret is knowing your limits before you sit down, not after you’ve lost them.”
