MaST Community Charter School and the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 5 recently completed a culinary partnership patterned after the popular Food Network series Chopped. The partnership allowed students from MaST to gain culinary experience while learning from the real chefs at FOP Lodge 5’s restaurant and catering facilities.

Students were paired with chefs from the FOP, learning how to cut, cook and create a meal.

John Swoyer, CEO at MaST, said, “This is an excellent opportunity for our students to understand how to prepare a meal from start to finish. Cooking is an important skill, and a career in the culinary field is an outstanding career. It is important for our students to be well-rounded when they leave high school.”

John McNesby, president of FOP Lodge 5, said, “We are proud to partner with MaST Community Charter School. It is important to me and our members that we be part of the community and give back in any way possible.”

The program included two cook-offs, including one on March 25. Administrators and counselors from MaST were the judges. Contestants were supplied with random ingredients with which they were asked to prepare a meal.

“I was excited when the students approached me with this idea,” MaST Principal Pat Goldener said. “Our students have a thirst for learning and want to broaden their horizons.”
