The bridge that carries Willits Road over the Wooden Bridge Run will be reduced to one lane while repairs are made — in mid-2014.
The span over the Pennypack Creek tributary is between Cloverly and Ryerson roads. The deck and supporting beams need some work, said Eugene Blaum, a Pennsylvania Department of Transportation spokesman. The repair work is in the design phase and won’t even be put out to bid until 2014, he said, adding work could begin that summer.
The bridge will be open during construction, he said, but reduced to one lane. Temporary signals will be used to control traffic flowing over the bridge, he said.
Two nearby Holme Avenue bridges were closed to traffic over the summer and just reopened in October. One spans a freight line; the other, Wooden Bridge Run (or Wood Run).
The bridge over the railroad was in such bad shape that it had to be completely closed while a new structure was put up, forcing Holme Avenue traffic to be detoured for several months. ••
