Students can vie for Rotary scholarships

The Rotary Club of Northeast Sunrisers and the Gundaker Foundation of Rotary District 7450 are offering scholarships to selected students who will be college juniors and seniors during the 2012–13 academic year.

Grants range from $1,000 to $10,000.

To be eligible, applicants must be full-time students who are enrolled in an undergraduate program in any college or university. They must live in Philadelphia or attend school in the city.

Applicants must have outstanding academic credentials and records of leadership in their schools, communities or other settings.

Completed applications must be submitted to the Rotary Club of Northeast Sunrisers by Jan. 17. Award announcements will be made by June. Grants will be paid between June and September.

In other news from the Rotary Club’s Dec. 9 meeting:

• The Rotary Club of Northeast Sunrisers presented checks to the following organizations: Manor College’s Rotaract club; DePaul USA, which assists homeless men; Feast of Justice; Project Warm, which provides coats for the needy; Northeast Victim Service; Rotaplast International, which arranges surgeries for children in third-world countries with cleft lips; the Pennsylvania SPCA; Pegasus Riding Academy; the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program; the International Eye Foundation; the Northeast Community on Homelessness; Front Step, a literacy program; Jewish Family and Children’s Service of Greater Philadelphia; and the Medical Mission Sisters.

• Members of the local Rotary club sponsored a holiday party last Friday at Widener Memorial School, at 1450 W. Olney Ave., for students with disabilities.

• The club will hold its eighth annual spaghetti dinner on Thursday, Jan. 12, from 5 to 8 p.m., at Rhawnhurst Presbyterian Church, at 7701 Loretto Ave. (at Napfle Street).

The cost is $10 for adults and $5 for children. Takeout and vegetarian meals are available.

Proceeds will benefit Polio Plus, Rotary International’s global effort to eradicate polio. All donations will be matched by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
