Zoning issues keep Bustleton on the move

Members of the Greater Bustleton Civic League voted on several zoning matters during their Feb. 22 session, backing some zoning variance applicants while snubbing others.

An oversized shed on the 9900 block of Haldeman Ave. was OK’d, as was an open-air parking space on the 9600 block of Birwood St. Neither is allowed by city code, so approval by the city’s Zoning Board of Adjustment is needed. Civic group members voted to inform the zoners they would not oppose variances on those properties.

Although many neighbors had no objection to a fence on the 9300 block of Voits Place that was higher than permitted by code, league members voted to oppose it.

A proposal to split a property on the 9700 of Bustleton Ave. into commercial and residential lots was not supported either. An oversized shed on the 800 block of Pine Hill Ave. also was shot down, said the league’s president, John McKeever.

After a lot of discussion, members did not formally vote on a proposal to make the two addresses that make up Randi’s restaurant into one address and to allow piano playing, but they did vote to support it if the lease on the Grant Avenue eatery would limit any zoning changes to the current operators.

Neighbors of the First Ukrainian Evangelical Church on the 9600 block of Krewstown Road objected to plans for constructing offices and a music room as well as other improvements, McKeever said. However, league members heard the church’s presentation and neighbors’ objections without voting.

The property changes the church wants to make are not permitted because the land is in a residential zone. A variance is needed. League members will vote on the proposal at a later date. ••
