Spring cleanups just around the corner

More Northeast residents are going to be involved in organized efforts to tidy up their neighborhoods during the city’s fifth annual spring cleanup this Saturday.

Volunteers are welcome. Most efforts start at about 9 a.m. and run to the early afternoon. Some groups are trying to launch regular neighborhood cleanups by participating in Saturday’s citywide event.

Check out the following list to see if there is a group near you:

Rowland Avenue from Hartel to Sheffield Avenue;

Frankford Avenue between Levick and Sheffield;

Russo Park, Cottman and Torresdale;

Academy Road between the police station at Red Lion Road and the firehouse at Comly Road;

Torresdale Recreation Center, 9550 Frankford Ave.;

Holmesburg Recreation Center, Rhawn and Ditman streets;

Max Myers Playground, 1601 Hellerman St.;

Roosevelt Playground, 6455 Walker St.;

Sixty-second Ward Republican Committee, Torresdale and Harbison;

Tacony Creek Park, Bingham and Ruscomb streets (10 a.m.);

Roosevelt Boulevard and Summerdale Avenue.

SEPTA will be cleaning up the Frankford Transportation Center, the Margaret-Orthodox El stop and the Fox Chase Regional Rail station.

Groups pick up trash, which is collected by the Streets Department. Some organizations have arranged to get city-supplied shovels, brooms, rakes and trash bags. Others take the event beyond policing their neighborhoods by planting flowers and shrubs, mulching beds and painting park benches.

Even though the city is making some supplies available, including work gloves, some volunteers might want to bring their own gloves and tools they feel comfortable using.

Last week, the Northeast Times reported several other groups will be cleaning up the area in and around the Lighthouse Soccer Club fields at Southampton Road and the Boulevard; the 1300 block of Aston Place; Gifford Playground; Pegasus Riding Academy; Parkwood; Frankford near Meadow and Mulberry; Overington Park; Simpson Playground; Wissinoming Park; Mayfair Memorial Playground; and Tacony, starting at the local library branch, 6742 Torresdale Ave. ••
