Officers Ryan Laskowski and Francis Sanchez of the 2nd Police District don’t work together regularly, but when they do, they click.
And they’re busy, said their commander, Capt. Michael McCarrick. They handle the most radio calls in their platoon and are responsible for several arrests as well as numerous car and pedestrian stops.
Sanchez and Laskowski were honored as Officers of the Month for May at the Sept. 11 meeting of the 2nd Police District Advisory Council. They’re a team to be relied upon, the captain said during the PDAC session at the Philadelphia Protestant Home on Tabor Avenue.
In the summer, McCarrick said, life might seem slower to most people, but not to police. They’ve been busy, the captain said.
The activity has had results, he added, and the district has seen decreases in all types of crimes. Some of those successes come from cooperative work with police in nearby Montgomery and Bucks counties, McCarrick said.
Pill use by juveniles is spreading, the captain said. That’s happening just about everywhere, and parents can’t detect their children are using illicit drugs in pill form.
Drug sellers also are hiding their wares in homes throughout the Northeast, McCarrick said. The only time police are made aware of the existence of a particular “stash house,” he said, is when the drug dealers do something to draw attention to themselves.
“And they don’t,” McCarrick said.
Neighbors should be aware that most drug houses are rentals. If they notice extra security, like outside cameras, or odd behavior at a property, it just might be a stash house, he said.
The 2nd district’s community relations officer, Mark Mroz, said a benefit for the family of Highway Patrol Officer Brian Lorenzo is scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 10, from 7 to 11 p.m., at the Southampton Room, 2980 Southampton Road. Tickets are $30.
Lorenzo was traveling on Interstate 95 on his way to his Somerton home at 3 a.m. on July 8 when he was killed in a collision with a vehicle headed in the wrong direction.
