A suspected car thief died after he ran a stop sign and crashed into a U-Haul truck at a Castor Gardens intersection on Saturday, police said.
Police have identified the ill-fated motorist only as a man in his 20s. Shortly before 9 a.m. on Saturday, he was driving a silver 2010 Mazda westbound on Princeton Avenue when he disregarded a stop sign at Summerdale Avenue and crashed into a southbound 2007 Ford U-Haul truck, police said. Both vehicles came to rest in a nearby residential yard.
Paramedics pronounced the Mazda driver dead at the scene. The U-Haul driver, a 34-year-old man, was taken to Albert Einstein Medical Center in stable condition with complaints of head, back and chest pain. No passengers were involved in the crash.
About 45 minutes after the crash, a woman contacted police to report that she woke up to discover that her car had been stolen from a parking spot near her home. It was the same 2010 Mazda. ••
