Murt hosts ‘There Ought to Be a Law’ contest for students

In a move to stimulate interest in state government, state Rep. Thomas Murt (R-Montgomery/Philadelphia) is sponsoring a contest entitled “There Ought to Be a Law.”

The contest is open to all third-, fourth- and fifth-grade students who attend school in the 152nd Legislative District, which includes parts of Northeast Philadelphia. Each student may submit one idea for a new law in Pennsylvania. The proposed law should be an original idea and be explained in writing in as much detail as possible, but should not be more than approximately two double spaced pages. Entries may be handwritten or typed. Students may work individually or with one other student.

Those interested in participating in the contest should submit their proposed law as well as a cover sheet noting the following information:

Student Name, School, Grade, and Teacher’s Name

Student Address and Phone Number

Subject of the Proposed Law

Entries may be mailed or hand-delivered to Rep. Murt’s Hatboro office. All submissions must be received by Monday, March 24, 2014. Mailed submissions should be sent to:

State Rep. Thomas Murt

Attn: Ed Diasio

19 S. York Road

Hatboro, PA 19040

A special panel of judges will select one winning proposal from each grade level once the contest deadline has passed. Contest winners and the details of the winning proposals will be submitted to local newspapers (with parent/guardian approval). The contest winners and their parents will be offered a special visit and tour of the state Capitol in Harrisburg to see the Pennsylvania House of Representatives in session.
