MaST Charter receives high ranking

MaST Community Charter School in Somerton was ranked 22nd among public high schools in Pennsylvania in the recently released U.S. News and World Report Best High Schools rankings.

The analysis examined more than 31,200 high schools nationally (691 in Pennsylvania) based on their performance on state-mandated student assessments, their effective education of minority and economically challenged students, along with their participation and performance on Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate exams.

MaST was the leading high school in Northeast Philadelphia and fourth-best citywide behind two magnet schools, Masterman and Central, as well as the Academy at Palumbo. Masterman was ranked first in the state overall. MaST showed an eight-spot improvement over the 2013 rankings and was the only charter high school ranked among the top 60 statewide.

MaST was ranked 995th nationally and 127th among charter schools. With 1,247 students, the school has a 28 percent minority enrollment and 36 percent economically disadvantaged enrollment with 76 full-time teachers. On standardized tests, the student body was 86-percent proficient in reading and 84 percent in math with a “college readiness index” of 35.1. ••
