Police arrest armed robber after spree

Richard Bynum

Philadelphia police last week announced the recent arrest of an armed robber who allegedly spent more than three months terrorizing businesses in the northern and northeastern areas of the city.

Richard Bynum, 48, of the 2300 block of 79th Ave. in West Oak Lane, allegedly targeted shops, convenience stores and pharmacies in East Mount Airy, Cedarbrook, East Oak Lane, Lawndale, Oxford Circle and Rhawnhurst between March 5 and his June 17 capture. Authorities charged him in connection with 10 hold-ups, including those at Rite Aid, 8130 Roosevelt Blvd., on March 14; Rite Aid, 5694 Rising Sun Ave., on April 8; and Rite Aid, 6401 Oxford Ave., on April 13.

Investigators identified Bynum as the alleged culprit in the aftermath of an armed robbery of the CVS at 6344 Stenton Ave. on June 17. In that case, the robber demanded money from the store manager at gunpoint. The manager placed cash into the robber’s backpack, along with a GPS tracking device, which led police to a car on the 2400 block of 78th Ave. Officers found a black handgun in the car, along with clothing worn by the robber, police said. Bynum, who is also known as Richard Lawrence, was arrested a short time later. ••
