Hundreds audition for ‘Millionaire’ at Philadelphia Mills

Kellen Tangle, his daughter, Avianna, and fiancé, Bridget Warriner, wait in line to audition for Who Wants to be a Millionaire.

A crowd of people aspiring to ethereal tax brackets lined up Thursday afternoon at Dave & Buster’s in the Philadelphia Mills to try out for the long-running game show Who Wants to Be a Millionaire.

Supervising producer Liz Harris liked the turnout for the noon to 6 p.m. audition. She said the show wants to feature people from an assortment of backgrounds and personalities, and she certainly got them at Dave & Buster’s.

Recent college grad and actor Jackie DiFerdinando of Cheltenham was at the back of line with her dad, John, at the Oct. 9 audition, and was hoping her knowledge of “random geek trivia” would build her a path to the show and the big money. Her father, a Philadelphia Phillies security guard, said his special areas are sports and history.

Retired teacher Pat McGorty of Bensalem previously tried out for the show and was hoping he would make the cut. Forklift operator Rob Fleckenstein of Parkwood also had auditioned previously and was relying on his general knowledge to get him on the show. Journalist Albert Stymm of South Philly was banking on his familiarity with history and geography.

The show’s contestants are asked a series of questions that get progressively more difficult as the prize money swells. There are moments when a contestant can take the money and quit. A contestant can poll the audience for help, ask the producers to remove two of four possible answers or call a friend.

“We came to the same venue last year,” Harris said, adding she believe D&B will be “a staple for us.”

Those who tried out last week will be notified by email and, if they made the cut, they’ll be contacted by phone and will meet further with producers. The D&B event was the last audition of the season, Harris said. ••
