Officers of the Month honored by 7th PDAC

John Conway and Barbara Tiano were named Officers of the Month in the 7th Police District during the Nov. 20 meeting of the 7th Police District Advisory Council.

Conway and Tiano were the first officers at the scene of an Oct. 23 shooting on the 8900 block of Alton Place in Rhawnhurst, where they arrested the alleged gunman and rendered first aid to a critically injured victim.

The officers went to the scene in response to a police radio report of a man with a gun. Witnesses reported hearing shots fired and seeing a man standing over another man, who was lying on the ground in the rear driveway of a rowhome. The gunman allegedly fired shots at the prone victim, then walked away to reload his weapon, witnesses said according to police. The gunman then allegedly fired shots at the victim’s house, kicked the victim in the head and fired additional shots at him.

When the officers arrived, Tiano went to the victim, who was on the ground holding his stomach. Meanwhile, Conway and other officers went into an alley in pursuit of the suspected shooter. They found the suspect in the alley, standing with his hands raised and holding an AR15 rifle. The police ordered the man to put down the weapon before Conway handcuffed him. Investigators found 26 empty shells and an empty magazine at the scene.

The victim was taken to a local hospital in critical condition. The alleged shooter was charged with attempted murder and related offenses. ••
