Blues star to perform at Folk Festival

Florida’s Selwyn Birchwood, the winner (in a field of over 125 other bands) of the 2013 International Blues Challenge, will perform on the main stage at the Philadelphia Folk Festival, at the Old Pool Farm, 1323 Salford Station Road in Schwenksville, on Friday, Aug. 14.

Show time is 7:30 p.m.

Birchwood recently received the 2014 Blues Music Award for Best New Artist Album of the Year for his Alligator Records debut, Don’t Call No Ambulance.

Festival tickets range from $27.50 to $165. Children 11 and younger are admitted free,

Folk Festival in August

The 54th annual Philadelphia Folk Festival will take place from Aug. 13–16 at Old Pool Farm in Upper Salford Township, Montgomery County.

Musicians will perform on eight stages, and there will be a 3,500-square-foot dance floor. The lineup includes Lyle Lovett and his Large Band, Arlo Guthrie, Shakey Graves, North Mississippi Allstars, Bruce Cockburn, Tom Paxton, Madisen Ward and the Mama Bear and Larry Campbell and Teresa Williams.

Guests will be able to shop for handmade clothes, jewelry, pottery, glass, toys and musical instruments.

Activities for children will include jugglers, crafts, storytelling and sing-a-longs.

Jazz event at Glen Foerd

Glen Foerd on the Delaware, 5001 Grant Ave., will host Jazz Age on the Delaware on Saturday, Aug. 1, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

There will be 1920s music and dancing, picnics, food, drink, shopping, mansion tours, lawn games, antique automobiles and a pie-baking contest. The event will be held rain or shine.

Tickets are $45 in advance and $55 at the door. Children 12 and under are admitted free. Proceeds will support Glen Foerd’s mission to preserve the estate for the community and future generations.

Glen Foerd concert on Aug. 20

The Monday Blues Swing Orchestra, a big band, will perform on Thursday, Aug. 20, from 7 to 8 p.m. at Glen Foerd on the Delaware, 5001 Grant Ave.

The concert will be held in the estate’s outdoor event structure overlooking the Delaware River.

Admission is pay what you wish. Proceeds from the concert will benefit the Glen Foerd estate and the concert artists.

Guests are encouraged to bring their own chairs and pack a picnic dinner. The Dining Car will sell goods from its bakery. ••

Local talent at Folk Festival

The 54th annual Philadelphia Folk Festival will feature 35 Philadelphia Music Co-op members, thanks to a grant from the Martin Guitar Charitable Foundation.

The Co-op works with area musicians to showcase, collaborate and develop them as artists. The artists play alternative folk, Americana, bluegrass, traditional, contemporary and independent music.

The Folk Festival will take place from Aug. 14–16 at Old Pool Farm in Upper Salford Township, Montgomery County.

The event will feature music, dance, crafts, camping and children’s activities on 80 acres of ground.

Entertainers will include Arlo Guthrie; Tom Paxton; Shakey Graves; Cassie and Maggie McDonald; Dave Gunning; El Caribe Funk; The HillBenders, performing The Who’s Tommy; Irish Mythen; Larry Campbell and Teresa Williams; Lindi Ortega; Low Cut Connie; Matt Andersen; Madisen Ward and the Mama Bear; Parker Millsap; Philly Bloco; Steve Riley and the Mamou Playboys; and Selwyn Birchwood.

September concert at Bull Shooters

The Polish rock band Riverside will be in concert on Tuesday, Sept. 15, at Bull Shooters Saloon, 14000 Bustleton Ave. in Somerton.

Others on stage will be In the Presence of Wolves, Shadow Merchant and The Sixxis.

The concert is for anyone 21 or older.

Doors open at 6 p.m. The concert starts at 7.

Advance tickets are $15. Parking is free.

The Delaware River City Corporation will be hosting a free movie night at Pennypack on the Delaware, at State Road and Rhawn Street, on Wednesday, Aug. 19.
