The Take Back Your Neighborhood civic association will hold its annual Northeast Celebration on Saturday, Aug. 22, at Max Myers Playground, 1601 Hellerman St.
The day will include activities for kids, music, food and appearances by community organizations.
Catholic Community Services will distribute 200 schoolbags from 9:30 to 11 a.m.
The bulk of the activities will take place from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Among the organizations participating will be the Philadelphia Zoo, the Academy of Natural Sciences, the Franklin Institute, the Barnes Foundation, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, the Samuel S. Fleisher Art Memorial, Girl Scouts, CLIP, Town Watch, American Red Cross, Rhawnhurst NORC, Rhawnhurst Turning Point, Northeast Regional Library, Philadelphia More Beautiful Committee, SPCA, the Center for Families and Relationships and the Clay Studio.
Rite Aid will provide flu shots, and Walgreens will offer flu shots and blood pressure and diabetes screenings. Home Depot will present a workshop for children.
Steve’s Prince of Steaks will be on hand. There will be no charge for a steak sandwich, though people can make a $3 donation to Take Back Your Neighborhood.
Other activities will include a magician, caricature artists, clowns, carnival games, face-painting, a balloon artist, a glitter tattoo artist, nail polishing, a photo tent, dance performances, an antique fire engine, a book giveaway, storytelling, door prizes, raffles, sand art and spin art. About 1,000 people attended a year ago.
“I’m hoping for a lot more,” said Jared Solomon, president of the civic association. “We just can’t wait. We’ve been planning for months. It will be a one-stop shop.” ••
