Gunman prompts five-hour standoff

A suicidal man with a gun fired two shots and held police at bay for about five hours in Bustleton last Friday before police negotiators and SWAT members teamed to capture him.

No deaths or injuries occurred during the police operation, according to social media posts by Chief Inspector Joe Sullivan, who oversees Homeland Security for Philadelphia police.

Sullivan reported the conclusion of the ordeal at about 11:30 p.m. It happened at the Ambassador II Apartments on the 800 block of Red Lion Road. The man, whom authorities have not identified, fired a shot from his balcony and was holding a gun to his head when police arrived.

Negotiators made contact with the man as SWAT officers assembled outside with an armored vehicle. Other tenants sheltered in place, although rescuers were standing by. During the next five hours, the man fired off another shot, but negotiators talked him down to the point where he fell asleep. SWAT officers then entered the apartment covertly and disarmed him before he could respond.

Police have not disclosed the man’s name or any criminal charges filed against him. ••
