Verizon presented a check for $10,000 to the Officer Daniel Boyle Scholarship Fund on Friday afternoon at Archbishop Ryan High School.
The presentation was made by Frank Buzydlowski, Verizon’s director of state government affairs and a 1972 Ryan graduate.
Pat Boyle, the slain officer’s father, attended the ceremony. He was joined by Ryan students, school president Denise LePera, principal Joe McFadden and the Rev. Rene Barczak, the school’s director of alumni.
The scholarship fund’s board members were also on hand.
Elected officials taking part were City Councilman Brian O’Neill and state Reps. Mike Driscoll and Martina White.
Daniel Boyle, a Ryan graduate, was killed in 1991 by Edward Bracey, who was convicted and sentenced to death.
Courts, though, have overturned the sentence. Philadelphia Common Pleas Court Judge Teresa Sarmina determined that Bracey was “intellectually disabled.” Also, Gov. Tom Wolf refuses to sign death warrants. ••
