Police announced the arrests early this afternoon, but did not identify the male suspects by name. One is 18 and the other 17.

According to police, the 17-year-old used a key to unlock the third-floor bathroom where the assault occurred. Police did not specify why he had a key or how he obtained it.

The incident began at about 9:55 a.m. The victim reported she was walking to class in a third-floor hallway when the 18-year-old approached her from behind, put his arm on her shoulder and attempted to engage her in conversation. She pushed him away and kept walking.

The 18-year-old grabbed the victim again, she said, and forced her into a bathroom that had been unlocked by the 17-year-old. The younger suspect stood guard outside the bathroom as the 18-year-old grabbed the victim by the throat and attempted to assault her sexually. She screamed, prompting a teacher to enter the bathroom and stop the assault.

Both suspects were detained at the scene. The 18-year-old has been charged with attempted rape, simple assault, reckless endangerment, unlawful restraint and related offenses. The 17-year-old was charged as a juvenile with conspiracy to commit rape, conspiracy to commit assault, conspiracy to commit unlawful restraint and related offenses. ••
