Tax help at local libraries

Volunteers with AARP Taxaide will be preparing tax returns at Bustleton Library, 10199 Bustleton Ave., and Katherine Drexel Library, 11099 Knights Road, by appointment.

Taxpayers should bring photo identification cards, last year’s return, all tax documents and Social Security number proof for themselves and dependents.

Holme Circle Civic meeting on Wednesday

The Holme Circle Civic Association will meet on Wednesday, Jan. 24, at 7 p.m. in the St. Jerome School hall, at Colfax and Stamford streets.

Detective Joseph Rovnan, a 28-year veteran of the Philadelphia Police Department, will be the guest speaker. He’ll offer advice for people on how to react if they are in the presence of an active shooter.

Rovnan serves in the Homeland Security Counter-Terrorism Operations section. He is the lead instructor for the city’s negotiator program and several Weapons of Mass Destruction courses and is a leader on the Major Incident Response Team for Philadelphia and surrounding counties. ••

Concert to be held Sunday at St. William

The St. William Sunday Concert Series continues on Jan. 28 at 2 p.m. in the lower church, 6200 Rising Sun Ave. The Philadelphia Flute Quartet will perform. In addition, there will be music that explores the use of the piccolo, alto and bass flutes.

Music performed will include works by Jennifer Higdon, Eugene Bozza, George Gershwin, Ann McGingy, Louis Anthony DeLise, Mike Mower, Duke Ellington and John Philip Sousa.

Donate socks to help the homeless

City Councilman Allan Domb is conducting a Warm the Sole Sock Drive throughout January.

Domb is asking Philadelphians to donate new socks for homeless people of all ages.

Socks can be donated at all City Hall entrances and Room 316; Zion Baptist Church, Broad and Venango streets; Liquid Salon, 1742 Sansom St., second floor; state Rep. Mike Driscoll’s office, 3294 Red Lion Road; and the office building at 1845 Walnut St. ••

Open house at St. Cecilia Elementary

St. Cecilia Elementary School, 525 Rhawn St., will host an open house and pancake breakfast on Sunday, Jan. 28, from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Call 215–725–8588. ••

Prom and formal expo at St. Hubert

St. Hubert High School, 7320 Torresdale Ave., will host a prom and formal wear expo on Sunday, Jan. 28, from 2 to 5 p.m.

Tickets are $20 for adults and $10 for children and students. The afternoon will include a catered lunch and more than 50 raffle baskets.

Maternity BVM holding Hall of Honor

Maternity BVM, 9322 Old Bustleton Ave., will host its second annual Hall of Honor and communion breakfast on Sunday, Jan. 28, at 10:30 a.m. in the parish hall.

The honorees will be Frank Buzydlowski, director of legislative affairs for Verizon, and Patrick Diamond, a deacon at St. Cecilia Parish.

The event will feature performances by students.

Upcoming shows at Shaare Shamayim

Congregations of Shaare Shamayim, 9768 Verree Road, will host Tu B’Shevat Music & Dance on Sunday, Jan. 28, at 10 a.m. Guest performer Sagit Zilberman will lead the crowd in singing and dancing, connecting people to nature and their Jewish heritage. The event is free, and all ages are welcome.

Congregations of Shaare Shamayim will also host a performance by Charles deMets on Sunday, Jan. 28, at 6 p.m. The show will feature music from the Great American Songbook. Stu Weitz, a cabaret singer with a Frank Sinatra style and a comedic personality, will also entertain. The evening will include a four-course Italian feast. The cost is $30.

Holy Innocents sponsors trip to AC

Holy Innocents Catholic Church is sponsoring a trip to Atlantic City’s Tropicana Casino on Sunday, Jan. 28.

A bus will depart L Street and Hunting Park Avenue at 9 a.m., then leave from the Tropicana at 4:30 p.m. The cost is $30. Riders will receive $30 in slot cash.

North class of ’68 reunion

North Catholic High School class of 1968 will celebrate its 50th reunion on June 8, from 7 to 11 p.m. at the painters and allied trades hall, 2980 Southampton Road.

The evening will include disc jockey Vinny Ro, buffet and open bar.

The cost is $40 per person. Couples are welcome.

Workshop on car safety

The AARP has developed a 90-minute Smart DriverTEK presentation to unravel the mysteries of vehicle safety features by assisting people in understanding what these new technologies are designed to do, how they work and how to use them.

These features can include smart headlights, reverse monitoring systems, blind spot warning systems, lane departure warning systems, forward collision warning, drowsy driver alerts, assistive parking and adaptive cruise control.

The interactive workshop will take place on Saturday, Feb. 3, from 10:30 a.m. to noon at Jefferson Torresdale Hospital, Red Lion and Knights roads.
