Super Bowl LII is just days away. The New England Patriots have built what one could describe as a Super Bowl empire (many Eagles fans refer to it as the evil empire). The 10 appearances and five wins in the big game have a little something to do with it.

The Philadelphia Eagles, on the other hand, are making just their third appearance in the Super Bowl, with the other two coming during the 1980 and 2004 seasons, with the result in the latter contest being a 24–21 defeat at the hands of those Patriots.

Could this finally be the year the Eagles win the big one and give a crowd of millions that parade down South Broad Street?

This year marks the 70th anniversary of the first NFL championship in team history. In 1948, the Eagles defeated the Chicago Cardinals — predating the Chicago Bears — 7–0 at Shibe Park. Halfback Steve Van Buren, who would later be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, scored the lone touchdown on a 5-yard run. The heavy snowfall impacted the game conditions. The team, coached by Hall-of-Famer Earle “Greasy” Neale, finished the season 9–2–1. ••
