Spaghetti and meatballs at PPH
The Philadelphia Protestant Home, 6401 Martins Mill Road (at Tabor Road), will host a spaghetti and meatballs dinner on Thursday, April 26, from 4 to 6 p.m. The public is invited.

Audition for summer music camp for teens
Share the Spotlight is holding an auditions for its second summer in Philadelphia. The nonprofit organization offers a tuition-free rock music program for musicians in sixth through 12th grade.
Students who are accepted will rehearse in a band format twice a week during the summer and perform an end-of-the-season show in a professional venue.
The audition is at Keystone Soundworks, 4900 Longshore Ave., on Saturday, April 28. Students can audition on guitar, bass, drum set, keyboard or vocals. They should have some experience on their instrument and be motivated to practice and learn new parts.

Shredding event on May 5

Walk for disabilities on Sunday in Hatboro

New athletic center coming to Abington Friends
A groundbreaking ceremony is set for May 5, when Abington Friends School, 575 Washington Lane in Jenkintown, will construct the Richard N. Berman Athletics Center. The $9 million facility will be a major addition to the campus of the historic independent Quaker school.
The new athletics center will replace the school’s 50-year-old Hallowell Gymnasium and will be nearly three times larger. The new 32,895-square-foot, stone-and-brick building will house a competition-size basketball court, two practice courts, a large fitness center, offices, a training room, team and locker rooms as well as a lobby and multi-purpose room that can be used for school and community events. The new building is expected to open in February 2019.
Head of School Richard F. Nourie said the school was honored to collaborate with the Berman family in naming the building for Richard N. Berman, a dedicated family man who passed away in 2011.
Plans for the new athletics center were approved by Jenkintown Borough Council and supported by neighbors of the AFS campus. The Abington Township Board of Commissioners voted unanimously to approve the school’s plans. Architects at WRT Design in Philadelphia designed the new building. Anchor Management Group of Conshohocken is the construction manager.
A campaign has raised $8.125 million for the new athletics center. Abington Friends School enrolls 583 students from early childhood classes through 12th grade. ••
Irish heroes Thomas Darragh, Robert Cranston to be memorialized
Thomas Darragh and Robert Cranston, who fought for Irish independence, will be recognized on Saturday, May 5.
Darragh and Cranston were part of the Catalpa 6, who escaped an Australian prison in 1876 and made their way to the United States. Darragh and Cranston lived, died and are buried in Philadelphia.
Seamus Boyle, George McLaughlin and donors helped raise money to pay for headstones.
Headstones will be unveiled for Darragh at 11 a.m. at Greenmount Cemetery, 4301 N. Front St., and for Cranston at 1 p.m. at Most Holy Redeemer Cemetery, 4268 Richmond St. A reception will take place at 3 p.m. at Ancient Order of Hibernians, 7229 Tulip St. There will be food, refreshments, music and a PowerPoint presentation.

KleinLife receives grants
State Sen. John Sabatina Jr. (D-5th dist.) announced that the Raymond & Miriam Klein Jewish Community Center (KleinLife) will receive a $28,650 grant through the Senior Community Center Grant program.
“Community centers, like KleinLife, are vital to our senior population,” Sabatina said. “The services and programs offered at KleinLife ensure that our seniors are able to remain engaged, healthy, and safe in our community.”
Located at 10100 Jamison Ave., KleinLife provides a variety of services to promote an active lifestyle for seniors. Services include education programs, travel opportunities, assistance with social services, in-home support and nutritional meal programs.
Sabatina said the grant will help the center expand and improve its services.
