Wissinoming Civic returns from summer break

Wissinoming civic group discusses community garden

The Wissinoming Civic Association discussed the community garden and other topics during its first meeting since June.

The Wissinoming Civic Association met Sept. 25 at Grace City Church for the first time since June to discuss various issues in the neighborhood.

WCA member Sean Null updated the group on the community garden, which was established last year behind St. Bartholomew Church in an area known as “The Grotto.”

“We had a successful year with some drawbacks,” Null said. “There were some thefts early in the year.”

He said community members believe the thief was a homeless man living in the garden. After the man went into the church to ask for money, police escorted him away, Null said.

“He’s never been back,” Null said. “Since then, the garden’s been in full bloom and everybody’s getting their tomatoes, peppers and stuff. Up until that point, someone was taking everything.”

Null said organizers are working on getting a grant to build a fence around the garden to prevent future thefts. The cost would probably be around $350, he said. Due to the thefts, Null is offering free beds in the garden to anyone who paid for one last year.
