Solomon endorses DiBerardinis; Stack expected to join at-large Council race

State Rep. Jared Solomon (D-202nd dist.) has endorsed Justin DiBerardinis in the Democratic primary for an at-large City Council seat.

“Justin DiBerardinis has the passion, smarts and integrity to bring real change to City Hall. He has fought for neighborhoods across Philadelphia, and I know he will fight hard to serve my constituents in the Northeast,” Solomon said. “Justin will be on the frontlines to ensure that the Northeast has top-line city services from trash removal to street cleaning. In addition, Justin will work tirelessly to address our most pressing legacy issue, poverty, that continues to hold our city back. Justin will move Philly forward. I’m proud to stand with Justin in his run for City Council at large.”

Solomon has also endorsed Eryn Santamoor in the at-large Council race.

The crowded at-large Council race on the Democratic side is expected to include several Northeast candidates, including Mike Stack, Vinny Black, Hena Veit and Melissa Robbins.

Stack, a former lieutenant governor, was also considered a possible candidate in the 10th Councilmanic District. But he’s circulating petitions in Ward 66-B, and presumably elsewhere, for an at-large seat.

Now, it looks like Ward 66-B committeewoman and Garces Events executive Judy Moore will square off with 56th Ward committeeman and financial auditor Taras Smerechanskyy in the 10th district Democratic primary. The winner will face Republican Councilman Brian O’Neill.

As for Stack, he ran unsuccessfully twice for the state Senate and for Council at-large in 1999 before upsetting Republican Sen. Hank Salvatore in 2000. He served until being elected lieutenant governor in 2014. He lost the Democratic primary for lieutenant governor last year. ••
