Carnival at St. Martha

The ninth annual St. Martha Parish Fall Carnival will take place from Thursday, Oct. 3, to Sunday, Oct. 6, at 11301 Academy Road.

Hours are 6 to 10 p.m. on Thursday, Friday and Saturday and 1 to 6 p.m. on Sunday.

The carnival will feature rides, games, raffle baskets, refreshments and food.

Senior Expo on Friday

City Councilman Al Taubenberger, in partnership with CareGivers America, is bringing a Senior Health & Resource Expo to Pelbano Recreation Center, 8101 Bustleton Ave., on Friday, Oct. 4, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

In addition to offering seniors snacks and light refreshments, the free event will include Councilmen Brian O’Neill, Allan Domb and Derek Green as well as more than 25 vendors and representatives of city agencies that serve senior citizens.

Taubenberger chairs the Committee on Aging.

“The hallmark of a good and just society is how well it treats its senior citizens,” he said. “Our seniors deserve to be revered and provided with the help and social services they need to live out their years in dignity. I look forward to seeing many friends and familiar faces at our Senior Expo on Oct. 4.” ••

Holy Innocents going to Atlantic City

Holy Innocents is planning a trip to the Tropicana Casino in Atlantic City on Thursday, Oct. 3.

A bus will depart L Street and Hunting Park Avenue at 9 a.m. The bus will depart the Tropicana at 4:30 p.m.

The cost is $30. Riders will receive $25 in slot cash.

History meeting Wednesday night

The Northeast Philadelphia History Network will meet on Wednesday, Oct. 2, at 7 p.m. at Pennepack Baptist Church, 8732 Krewstown Road.

The topic will be Hannah Callowhill Penn, the second wife of William Penn.

The speaker will be author Kathy Clark.

The history group will also acknowledge the work of lifelong Wissinoming resident Elaine Peden in tirelessly advocating for and eventually obtaining honorary Pennsylvania and United States citizenship for William Penn and Hannah Penn in 1984. ••

Big flea market on Saturday

A large VarageSale will take place on Saturday, Oct. 5, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Bethel Church parking lot, 903 Franklin Mills Circle.

The day will include new and used items, drinks and snacks. Spaces are $10 apiece. The lot opens at 5:30 a.m. for setup. The rain date is Oct. 12. All proceeds go to Bethel Church.

Designer Bag Bingo at the FOP

The Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 5 Auxiliary will host Designer Bag Bingo on Sunday, Oct. 6, at the FOP, 11630 Caroline Road.

Doors open at 12:15 p.m. Lunch is served at 1 p.m.

Tickets cost $40 and include 12 rounds of bingo. There will be a cash bar, auction baskets and a 50/50.

Talent show at St. Cecilia

St. Cecilia will present Talent Contest Act II on Saturday, Oct. 5, in the parish hall, 525 Rhawn St.

Comedy and music at AOH 39

The Northeast Catholic Alumni Association will sponsor a comedy and music night on Saturday, Oct. 5, from 7:30 to 11:30 p.m. at Ancient Order of Hibernians Division 39, 7229 Tulip St.

Irish music will start at 7:30, with comedians taking the stage at 8:30. Tickets cost $45.

There will be beer, wine, soda, a buffet, cash bar, comedians Sean Finerty and Kevin Casey, live Irish music by Mike Brill (North Catholic class of 1988), a Chinese auction and a Philadelphia sports ticket raffle.

Cemetery visits planned

KleinLife is organizing an excursion on Thursday, Oct. 3, to cemeteries in Delaware County.

The trip will depart from KleinLife, 10100 Jamison Ave., at 10 a.m. and will return about 3 p.m.

The visits will be to Mt. Jacob Cemetery, 700 W. Oak Lane, Glenolden; Mt. Sharon Cemetery, 500 E. Springfield Road, Springfield; and Mt. Lebanon Cemetery, 1200 Bartram Ave., Collingdale.

Crusader Classic 5K on Sunday

The 17th Annual Father Judge Crusader Classic 5K will take place on Sunday, Oct. 6, at 9 a.m.

All proceeds will benefit the Firefighter Lt. Robert Neary Scholarship Fund at Father Judge. Neary, class of 1970, died in 2012 when the roof of a Kensington furniture store collapsed on him as he monitored the scene at a fire at an abandoned warehouse.

The entry fee is $30. The cost is $15 for youths 18 and under. Race-day registration will take place in the Father Judge school yard beginning at 7:30 a.m.

The race will begin at the bandshell in Pennypack Park and continue along the banks of the Pennypack Creek and finish with a lap around the Father Judge track (behind the school). Medals will be presented to the top three male and female finishers in each age group.

St. William celebration

The St. William Catholic Church 100th anniversary dinner/dance celebration is set for Sunday, Oct. 6, from 2 to 7 p.m. at the Philadelphia Ballroom, 2014 Hornig Road. All school alumni and faculty, IHM sisters and former and current parishioners are invited.

The cost is $50 and includes an open bar, buffet and DJ. There will be more than 20 raffle baskets and silent auction prizes. Seating is limited.

Earlier in the day, there will be a Mass at noon in the upstairs church.

Extension for city programs

The city Department of Revenue has extended the deadline for Homestead Exemption and Senior Citizen Real Estate Tax Freeze applications.

The new deadline for the Homestead Exemption is Dec. 1. The new deadline for the tax freeze is Jan. 31.

People already enrolled do not have to reapply.

Parkwood meeting on Oct. 16

The Parkwood Civic Association will meet on Wednesday, Oct. 16, at 7 p.m. at Community College of Philadelphia Northeast Regional Center, 12901 Townsend Road.

There will be a guest speaker from Self Help Movement.

Also, the city election commissioners office will bring a new voting machine. ••

NEHS Class of ’79 reunion

The Northeast High School Class of 1979 is celebrating its 40th reunion on Nov. 30, from 7 to 11 p.m. at The Fuge, 780 Falcon Circle, Warminister.

Liberty Bell to host 5K/10K walk

On Saturday, Nov. 2, the Liberty Bell Wanderers Walking Club will host a 5K/10K walk through Langhorne. The walk will take place from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The trail begins at the Heritage Farm, 222 N. Green St. in Langhorne.

The walk goes through the historic district, passing buildings dated as far back as 1793.

This event is free and open to the public. Participants do not need to be a member of the Liberty Bell Wanderers to participate. Participants must register and complete a start card to be returned at the finish.

Smash a Dallas Cowboys car

Dunphy Ford, 7700 Frankord Ave., will be holding a Dallas Cowboys Car Smash on Saturday, Oct. 19, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The cost is $5 for three swings of a sledgehammer. The day will also include face painting, free hot dogs and soft drinks, special pricing on all vehicles, a basket auction and a 50/50.

During a similar event in 2014, a forklift dropped the car.

All proceeds will go to the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 5 Survivors Fund and the Franklin Towne Charter High School cheerleaders. ••

Food festival at St. Stephen

St. Stephen Orthodox Catholic Cathedral, 8598 Verree Road, will host an Old World Food Festival on Saturday, Nov. 2, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The day will include eat-in and takeout pierogies, kielbasa, halupki, halushki, borscht and babka. There will be baked goods, religious artifacts, gift basket raffles, church tours and kids crafts.

Lecture on Civil War riot

Learn about the 1861 mob scene at the Palmetto Flag, a Philadelphia newspaper that wanted to secede from the Union, during a lecture on Saturday, Oct. 26, at 2 p.m. at Northeast Regional Library, 2228 Cottman Ave.

The lecture will be presented by historian and instructor Michael Wunsch.

KleinLife announces trips to Broadway, AC

Travel with KleinLife kicks off with a fall foliage tour aboard a century-old restored railcar operated by the Colebrookdale Railroad, which will make a two-hour trip through the Secret Valley between Boyertown and Pottstown on Sunday, Oct. 27. The trip includes a full-course lunch at Boyertown’s Union Jack and roundtrip motorcoach transportation. The trip costs $115.

Then it’s off to Broadway to enjoy a performance of the new musical production Hadestown at the Walter Kerr Theatre on Sunday, Nov. 10. The trip offers orchestra seating and roundtrip motorcoach transport to and from New York. Cost is $275.

Travel with KleinLife will enjoy a day in Atlantic City at Resorts Casino on Wednesday, Nov. 20. The trip features $10 in slots play, a ticket to see the musical show of vocalist John Ciotta and roundtrip motorcoach transportation. Cost is $28. Deadline for registration is Oct. 11.

The program will visit the National Museum of American Jewish History in Center City to take in the new exhibition of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, among other prominent museum exhibits, on Friday, Dec. 13. The trip includes admission to the museum and roundtrip motorcoach accommodations. Cost is $55. Deadline for registration is Nov. 1.

The series concludes with a four-day, three-night trip to Newport, Rhode Island from June 8-11, 2020. Highlights of the trip are a tour of the Scenic Ten Mile Drive, a visit to the Touro Synagogue, America’s oldest, a visit to Olde Mistick Village and a harbor cruise. The excursion features three overnight stays at the Foxwoods Casino-Great Cedar Hotel, which includes a $30 slot play, three full breakfast buffets, two dinner buffets or a food credit and one dinner in a Newport restaurant as well as roundtrip motorcoach transportation. Cost for the trip is $750 double occupancy, with a $190 supplement for single occupancy.
