Food festival at St. Stephen

St. Stephen Orthodox Catholic Cathedral, 8598 Verree Road, will host an Old World Food Festival on Saturday, Nov. 2, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The day will include eat-in and takeout pierogies, kielbasa, halupki, halushki, borscht and babka. There will be baked goods, religious artifacts, gift basket raffles, church tours and kids crafts.

Honor Marines and Tony Rad

Showtime Charities will hold a musical tribute to Tony Radwanski and a celebration of the Marine Corps’ 244th birthday on Wednesday, Nov. 6, from 7 to 11 p.m. at Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 5, 11630 Caroline Road. Tickets cost $45, and must be purchased in advance. There will be a buffet dinner, draft beer, raffle baskets and basket of cheer.

Proceeds will benefit the Marine Corps-Law Enforcement Foundation, which was Radwanski’s favorite charity. Radwanski, a former first deputy city controller and popular singer at La Casa Di Lucia, died suddenly in January.

Liberty Bell Wanderers to host 5K/10K walk

On Saturday, Nov. 2, the Liberty Bell Wanderers Walking Club will host a 5K/10K walk through Langhorne. The walk will take place from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The trail begins at the Heritage Farm, 222 N. Green St. in Langhorne.

This event is free and open to the public. Participants do not need to be a member of the Liberty Bell Wanderers to participate. Participants must register and complete a start card to be returned at the finish.

Craft and home fair on Saturday

Delaire Landing is hosting a craft and home fair on Saturday, Nov. 2, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

All proceeds will benefit the Superheroes Project for preemie babies.

Benefit for military charities

The Michael Strange Foundation and Operation First Response will hold a Gala of Courage on Saturday, Nov. 2, from 6 to 10 p.m. at Drexelbrook Catering, 4700 Drexelbrook Drive, in Drexel Hill.

The guest will be Rob O’Neill, the Navy SEAL who shot Osama bin Laden.

The master of ceremonies will be Rich Zeoli, who hosts a morning show on WPHT (1210 AM).

Other speakers will be Thomas “Drago” Dzieran, a retired SEAL and political refugee from Poland; Ronny “Tony” Porta, severely injured in Iraq; Peggy Baker, mother of a combat veteran and founder of Operation First Response; and Charles Strange, a Gold Star father and founder of the Michael Strange Foundation.

U.S. Navy Petty Officer 1st Class Michael Strange was killed in Afghanistan in 2011. He was among 38 killed when their Chinook helicopter was shot down by insurgents. Strange, 25, grew up in Wissinoming and graduated from St. Bartholomew Elementary School and North Catholic High School (class of 2004).

Pierogi festival on the weekend

St. Nicholas Eastern Orthodox Church, 817 N. 7th St. (at Brown Street) in Northern Liberties, will host a pierogi festival on Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 2-3.

Hours are noon to 9 p.m. on Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday.

Jeanes offering grants

The Anna T. Jeanes Foundation, which supports Jeanes Hospital, is coordinating its annual Community Grants program.

Grants are awarded to provide funding for projects that promote the health and wellness of communities in the hospital’s service areas. Criteria include a project’s merit and community impact. The grants will range from $500 to $2,500 each.

Applications for the grants are being accepted until Nov. 15. Funds must be used in 2020.

Nonprofit organizations are eligible to apply, and must provide a copy of their tax exemption letter from the IRS and a completed W-9 form.

Organizations applying for grants must be located in one of the following ZIP codes: 19012, 19027, 19111, 19115, 19120, 19149, 19152, 19006, 19046, 19095, 19114, 19116, 19124, 19126, 19135, 19136, and 19154. Projects receiving funding must take place within these ZIP codes.

Tribute to Sinatra dinner show

Joey C will perform a Tribute to Sinatra Dinner Show on Thursday, Nov. 14, at La Casa Di Lucia, 14425 Bustleton Ave. Dinner starts at 6:30 p.m. The show is at 8 p.m.

Open house at local college

Harcum College Northeast will be holding an open house on Wednesdays, Nov. 6 and 20, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Northeast Learning Center, 7222 Castor Ave.

The center offers two accredited associate degree programs: human services and business management. Its sister site, Oxford Circle Grace Trinity Church, offers early childhood education. Classes are held two nights a week and offer full-time credits.

Visitors to the open house will meet the administrators, complete an application and talk to financial aid representatives. Classes are small, and begin again in January.

Applicants must have a high school diploma or a state-approved high school equivalency diploma. Harcum College also accepts transfer students who have attended other accredited colleges. Financial aid as well as Harcum College community-based grants are available for students who qualify.

Support Holocaust museum

The Holocaust Awareness Museum and Education Center is having its 58th annual silent auction and dinner, honoring U.S. Reps. Brendan Boyle and Brian Fitzpatrick, on Saturday, Nov. 16, from 6 to 10 p.m. at Congregation Adath Jeshurun, 7763 Old York Road, Elkins Park.

Boyle and Fitzpatrick have been advocates of Holocaust education for all young people.

Funeral directors association names new boss

David V. Peake Jr., of Robert L. Mannal Funeral Home, 6925 Frankford Ave., was installed as the 138th president of the Pennsylvania Funeral Directors Association.

Peake is a 1998 graduate of Pittsburgh Institute of Mortuary Science. He also attended Springfield Township High School and Kutztown University prior to going to PIMS.

After mortuary school, he served his apprenticeship with the Givnish Family Funeral Homes, after which he went to work at Mannal.

In 2012, Mannal acquired Craft Funeral Home of Erdenheim, and Peake is the supervisor for that funeral home. He has served the Philadelphia Local Funeral Directors Association as a board member (2010-2013), vice president (2013-2015) and president (2015-2017). Over the last three years, he has represented the Philadelphia Funeral Directors Association as its district governor for District 8.

Peake lives with his wife, Abbey, and their three children, Greyson, Olivia and Sawyer, in Flourtown. ••

Photo contest winners named

Tookany/Tacony-Frankford Watershed Partnership and Olney Culture Lab of CultureTrust Greater Philadelphia recently announced the winners of the Tacony Creek Park Photo Contest.

Professional and amateur photographers participated, and four winners were selected from 58 submissions.

The winners were Brandon Hing (adult first place), Jonathan Fredlund (adult second place), Yeredith Cruz (youth first place) and Yanilda Hernandez (youth second place). ••
