The Friends of Pennypack Park recently cleaned the area near Frankford and Solly avenues.
In all, 48 volunteers filled 101 bags of trash and cans, along with removing 11 tires, four shopping carts, two queen-sized box springs and a queen-sized mattress.
People illegally swimming in the natural waterways left behind a plethora of litter on the “beach.”

Jim Hunsburger and Jacques Hooker placed 98 bags of trash and three bags of cans into a city Parks & Recreation truck.
The trash included two shopping baskets; a milk crate; a hubcap; a baby mattress; three pillows; a sheet; a comforter; two umbrellas; two TV frames; a piece of scalloped concrete garden edging; the top of a wicker table; a piece of carpeting; a plunger; two cans of pink paint; a can of joint compound; two broken folding camp chairs; a fire pit; a half-bottle of lighter fluid; a barbecue grill; a cooking pot; a coffee mug; a zippered bag; two suitcases; a duffel bag; a tarp; a hairbrush; two bead hair bands; sandals; a sneaker; a sweater; pants; a soccer ball; three kiddie pools; swim goggles; a scooter; a cassette tape; a radio; a car bumper and hood medallion; two 5-gallon buckets; a power scrubber box; a wrought-iron pole; a piece of pipe; a wooden pallet; a framing pole; two PennDOT bridge construction signs; bricks; a cotton candy cone; a battery; a plastic post; bottles of booze; scratched-off lottery tickets; a piece of cyclone fencing; a carabiner on a piece of rope; a mesh crate; and a toy rainbow-colored battery powered guitar.
The next cleanup is Saturday, Nov. 23, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Sandy Run (Ryan and Sandyford avenues). FOPP will bring gloves, grabbers, bags, water and pretzels. Volunteers are welcome. Anyone under 18 must bring an adult. Call 215-934-PARK or email cleanup@friendsofpennypackpark.org. ••
