Tacony Library was abuzz Saturday afternoon with plenty of holiday-themed activities for the neighborhood’s annual Winterfest.
On one floor, children and adults were doing crafts, and, on another, there were performances representing Christmas, Kwanzaa and Hanukkah traditions. Outside, volunteers helped kids roast marshmallows for s’mores and people played outdoor games like cornhole.
The festivities also included photos with Santa, a Friends of the Tacony Library used book sale, a display by Adventure Aquarium’s Center for Aquatic Sciences and resource tables.
Alex Balloon, executive director of the Tacony Community Development Corporation, a Winterfest partner, said the event was a good opportunity for neighbors to meet each other in a family-friendly — and completely free — environment.
“These events are really important because they bring the entire community together for something positive,” Balloon said.
Planned trolley tours of historic sites in Tacony were canceled after the driver got sick and the company couldn’t find a replacement.
The Free Library of Philadelphia hosted the event with the help of the Friends group, CDC, Tacony Civic Association, Councilman Bobby Henon’s office, Tacony Historical Society, CityReach Church, the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society and the junior honor society at Keystone Academy Charter School. ••
