One dead after Holme Circle fire

Firefighters discovered a body following a fire Monday on the 8200 block of Colfax Street.

PHILADELPHIA FIRE DEPARTMENT

One person is dead after flames ripped through a twin home Monday evening in Holme Circle, fire department officials said.

Firefighters responded to the property on the 8200 block of Colfax Street at around 5:30 p.m. after a Philadelphia Gas Works employee noticed smoke coming from the home.

It took less than 20 minutes for crews to control the blaze, but firefighters found the person’s body in the basement, a fire department spokeswoman said.

“A difficult night on Colfax Street in Holme Circle,” the department said on social media. “Our thoughts are with all those affected and with our members who responded.”

NBC10 reported the victim was a 79-year-old man.

The Medical Examiner’s Office will determine a cause of death, and the Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the source of the fire. ••
