Coronavirus count rises citywide and in Northeast

Northeast Philadelphia ZIP codes account for 18.66% of all confirmed coronavirus cases in the city.

Health Commissioner Dr. Thomas Farley at a coronavirus advisory update.

The total number of confirmed coronavirus cases in Philadelphia reached 2,100 today as the cases in the Northeast hit 392.

Northeast Philadelphia ZIP codes represent 18.66% of the cases citywide, the city’s site shows. This number represents a small growth since Monday, when the Northeast accounted for 17.25% of all cases.

ZIP code 19111, which includes neighborhoods like Fox Chase and Lawndale, has 74 confirmed cases as of this morning at 9. This makes it the ZIP code with the sixth-highest number of cases in the city, though other areas are only a few cases behind. It has the highest case count outside of South Philadelphia.

There are 61 cases in 19116, which includes neighborhoods like Somerton and some of Bustleton, making it the second-highest Northeast Philly ZIP code. The others range from upper 20s to upper 40s.

Health Commissioner Dr. Thomas Farley noted that about half of the city’s infections are from people under the age of 50.

Two new people died from coronavirus-related causes yesterday, bringing the city’s death count to 17. Of these deaths, most were above the age of 70, but one was in their 40s and two were in their 50s.

Places such as nursing homes or prisons that have many people living in close proximity are the most at risk. Nine of the 17 coronavirus-related deaths in the city came from residents in nursing homes. There are 20 confirmed cases in the city’s prison system.

Farley reported there are 560 people currently hospitalized with coronavirus symptoms in the greater Philadelphia area, which includes Bucks, Chester and Montgomery counties. There are about 12,000 beds available in the greater Philadelphia area.
