The needy could use some help this year

Christmas is less than 10 days away, with Hanukkah ending on Friday.

While many Northeast families will be enjoying a holiday meal and gift-giving, others are struggling this time of year, with some hurting even more due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The 72nd annual Eleanor Smylie Community Fund drive is attempting to help the needy again this year.

Readers have been making donations to help people for more than seven decades. All money collected is used to buy gift cards to provide holiday dinners and children’s gifts.

We’ve heard from an elderly Far Northeast widow who has just a small Social Security check to support her mentally challenged daughter; a Tacony woman raising a grandchild; and a disabled Millbrook woman who has little after paying rent and bills.

Donors’ names will be published, unless they request to remain anonymous.

If you would like to request help, please take a few minutes to write a letter. The address is:

Eleanor Smylie Community Fund

2 Executive Campus

Suite 135

Cherry Hill, NJ 08002

Include a name and contact information for an agency or person for verification. Everything about the process will remain anonymous.

If you are able to donate, please send a check to the Eleanor Smylie Community Fund at the address above. Any amount will help.

Thank you for your consideration.
