The Lawncrest Community Association last Thursday discussed several zoning issues at an in-person meeting at St. William’s Monsignor James E. Mortimer Memorial Hall.
A Zoning Board of Adjustment hearing is scheduled for July 7 for a proposed eight-unit apartment at 6324 Newtown Ave. The owner will appear at LCA’s June 17 meeting.
A ZBA hearing is set for Sept. 8 for a proposed day care at 6520 Rising Sun Ave.
The owner of a property at 5966 Elsinore St. (at Comly Street) appeared at the meeting, trying to legalize the three-unit house. The bottom unit is a former store, and zoning allows only a single-family home. Residents had concerns about parking, especially because stormwater management infrastructure takes up spots. They also cited congestion and the fact the owner performed work without permits. The vote was unanimous to oppose the variance.
In other news, Montco Happening named Presentation BVM the best elementary school in Montgomery County. The school is in Cheltenham, just outside the city, and most of the students are from Philadelphia. Presentation has had five-day, in-person learning since September, and there were only two minor coronavirus cases.
The public is invited to attend a rededication ceremony for the World War I monument at Cottman, Oxford and Rising Sun avenues on Memorial Day, Monday, May 31, from 11 a.m. to noon. The monument has received new lighting and flags.
After that event, at 12:30 p.m., the public is welcome to attend a Memorial Day ceremony at the Michael J. Crescenz Medal of Honor Rising Sun VFW Post 2819, 6850 Martins Mill Road.
Members expressed support for more crossing guards, particularly at Rising Sun and Longshore avenues. They noted that some crossing guards at quiet intersections sit in their cars.
The Lawncrest 4th of July Celebration will be scaled back this year to feature only fireworks. ••
