Police said two males, 17 and 15 years old, began punching the victim and tried to steal his cell phone.

A witness walking his dog who knows the victim from the area intervened by yelling at the offenders and calling 911.

When officers from the 8th Police District arrived, the offenders were still on location. They were arrested and charged with aggravated assault, attempted robbery, simple assault and related offenses.

The victim was transported to Jefferson Torresdale Hospital by a fire department medic unit for a large laceration on his head that required stitches. He has been honored in the past for cleaning up the park.

Meanwhile, police said the victim of an assault on June 4 in Mayfair declined medical treatment and did not want to pursue an investigation.

The incident took place at Hawthorne and Friendship streets at 7:17 p.m. Two young black males began punching a 17-year-old Asian boy before fleeing northbound on Hawthorne. A girl cheered the attack.

The boy was walking with his grandmother, who police said also did not want to pursue an investigation. ••
