Burholme gearing up for meeting on proposed apartments

The apartments are planned for the site of a former Citizens Bank.

The Burholme Civic Association last week voted 8-0 to approve two commercial spaces coming to 800 Cottman Ave., the site of Regency Park apartments.

One business will be Brilliant Stars Learning Center, a 3,500-square-foot childcare facility for up to 60 kids. All activities will be inside. Hours will be weekdays 24 hours. There will be no cooking, only reheating of food. Cameras will be installed inside and outside.

The other business will be SKN Esthetics Co., a facial spa.

Both businesses needed approval because the site is zoned residential, explained attorney Natalie Young.

In other news, the civic association will meet again on Thursday, Jan. 27, at 7 p.m. at United Methodist Church of the Redeemer, 1128 Cottman Ave. A developer will discuss a proposed apartment complex at 7248 Rising Sun Ave.

The original plan was for 54 units, with 10 parking spots.

The plan was changed to 28 units, which could be built by right. According to Burholme officials, agreeing to install a green roof allowed seven more units to be built. By having a mixed-income complex, the site could grow by 50 percent.

The current proposal is for 52 apartments, with no parking, and construction is by right.

The civic is appealing the issuing of permits by the city Department of Licences and Inspections, with a lawyer expected to bring its case in front of the Zoning Board of Adjustment. ••
