State legislative maps have not been finalized, but Rep. Joe Hohenstein [D-177th dist.] is expected to face primary and general election opponents.
Bridesburg’s Harry Enggasser, Democratic leader of the 45th Ward, will challenge Hohenstein in the May 17 primary. A former Hohenstein aide, Aileen Callaghan, is also planning to run in the primary, but Callaghan’s house might not be in the district after maps are finalized.
Enggasser has run for the seat twice before, challenging Republican Rep. John Taylor in 2006 and ‘08.
The 177th Legislative District could change dramatically, as the Legislative Redistricting Commission last week approved a map that takes the district south and removes some of Hohenstein’s Frankford base. The overall map greatly benefits Democrats, and Republicans are likely to appeal to the state Supreme Court.
Meanwhile, Republican Mark LaVelle has his party’s endorsement in the 177th and will be officially announcing his candidacy early next month at Point No Point. ••
