The Kiwanis Club of Phil-Mont last week honored two young men for service to the community during a dinner at the Austrian Village in Rockledge.

The honorees were Matthew Guy and Eoghan Pleis, both of whom attended St. William Elementary School until it closed in 2012, then graduated from Presentation BVM and Roman Catholic High School.

Guy is a junior at Jefferson University, majoring in mechanical engineering. Over the years, he was an altar server, member of Boy Scout Troop 563, worked at a Scout summer camp and packaged food boxes and home delivered parish bulletins during the coronavirus.

Pleis is in the first year of a two-year welding program at Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology in Lancaster. He has been involved in Scouts and helped out at St. William Parish.

“Our future’s in good hands,” Kiwanis member Bill Markert said after hearing about the award winners’ backgrounds.

In addition to dinner, members enjoyed cake. The Rev. Al Concha, pastor at St. William, offered a prayer, Members recited the Pledge of Allegiance and sang My Country, ‘Tis of Thee.

The reception marked the end for the Kiwanis Club of Phil-Mont, which is disbanding after 66 years. Multiple generations of families served as members, including three generations of the Gimbels. Walter Gimbel Sr. was one of the co-founders. Jenny Gimbel was the club’s final president. ••
