St. Cecilia helps ill children
Saint Cecilia Elementary School hosted a dress-down day fundraiser on Oct. 21 to support the Give Kids the World Village in Kissimmee, Florida. Give Kids the World is a village where critically ill children and their families can stay during their Wish Trip to visit Disney World and other theme parks of central Florida. The faculty all wore their red polka dot ribbons (the symbol of GKTW), and others wore Phillies gear. ••

Councilman Brian O’Neill announced the Low-Income Senior Citizen Tax Freeze is now retroactive to 2018. New top doc at Temple Women’s Hospital
Dr. Jack Ludmir has been appointed Chief Physician Executive of the new Temple Women’s Hospital campus, 1331 E. Wyoming Ave., in the former home of Cancer Treatment Centers of America.
In his new role, he will work with Dr. Enrique Hernandez to plan and oversee clinical services provided by the clinical teams at Temple Women’s Hospital.
Dr. Ludmir earned his bachelor’s degree in biology from the University of Pennsylvania and his medical degree from Temple’s Lewis Katz School of Medicine, after which he completed his Obstetrics & Gynecology residency and Maternal-Fetal Medicine fellowship at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.
At the national level, Ludmir served as chairman of the Maternal Child Health Council for the American Hospital Association. As the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists liaison for Latin America, he worked in several countries to improve maternal healthcare and reduce maternal mortality with an emphasis on cultural competence, dignity, and respect. As a maternal fetal medicine specialist, Ludmir’s research interests focus on prematurity prevention and management of preeclampsia/eclampsia, both of which are common complications in obstetrics and responsible for significant maternal and perinatal morbidity and mortality. ••

The Philadelphia chapter of SCORE, a nonprofit partner of the U.S. Small Business Administration and the city Department of Commerce, is seeking volunteer mentors.
“We have plenty of opportunities to serve our clients,” said co-chairman Jack Musgrove said. “It’s gratifying for our mentors to help them.”
SCORE’s focus is “Counselors to America’s Small Business.”
Most mentoring and workshops are held virtually and can take place almost anywhere with internet access.

FCCC prof named a fellow
Fox Chase Cancer Center’s Dr. Andrea Porpiglia, assistant professor in the Department of Surgical Oncology, was recently inducted as a fellow into the Philadelphia Academy of Surgery.
Founded in 1879, the academy is the oldest continuously meeting surgical society in the United States. Its aim is to improve the practice of surgery, promote public health, and to help elevate the medical profession.
“It is an honor to be inducted into this prestigious academy, which is one of the oldest surgical societies. The academy has a long history of members who are leaders in Philadelphia and it is a privilege to be a part of this historic group,” Porpiglia said.
In order to become a fellow of the academy, a candidate must be a medical doctor or doctor of osteopathy who has graduated from a reputable school of medicine or osteopathy. They must also be either board certified in a surgical specialty by an American board of medical specialties or a fellow of the American College of Surgeons. Additionally, they must be nominated by an existing fellow in good standing and supported by another fellow before receiving approval from the council and being presented to the academy for election.
After completing her residency at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center in Memphis, Porpiglia trained as a surgical oncology fellow at Fox Chase in 2013. She then worked in private practice in the Philadelphia area for five years. She returned to Fox Chase as an instructor and surgeon in 2020.
Porpiglia’s focus is on soft tissue cancers, including gastrointestinal stromal tumors, sarcomas, breast, melanoma and skin cancers. Other specialties include neuroendocrine tumors, colorectal and stomach cancer. ••
