Fox Chase’s Brady named acting city controller

Christy Brady

Mayor Jim Kenney on Monday named Fox Chase resident Christy Brady, currently serving as Deputy City Controller, as Acting City Controller, effective immediately. Brady, with nearly 30 years of experience across a variety of roles within the Controller’s office, succeeds Rebecca Rhynhart, who resigned to run for mayor.

“As the independent financial watchdog for the City of Philadelphia, the Office of the Controller plays a critical role in ensuring that our municipal government operates effectively, and that taxpayers’ dollars are used as efficiently as possible. That’s why it’s important that the person taking on this role has the integrity, experience and expertise to engage all stakeholders while staying free from political bias,” Kenney said. “Christy Brady, who has held a number of roles within the Controller’s Office for nearly 30 years, is just the kind of dedicated public servant who — with her strong background and character — has the experience and financial acumen needed to help effectively evaluate best practices and cost savings across our city government.”

Brady has worked in the Controller’s Office for nearly three decades, serving in a variety of roles within the audit division — including as an Audit Associate, Audit Supervisor, Audit Manager and Audit Director — before being appointed Deputy City Controller in January 2017, the first woman to hold this title in the Controller’s Office. Under her direction, the Audit Division conducts financial, performance and compliance audits for all municipal departments and agencies, and renders opinions on the Annual Comprehensive Financial Reports and the Schedule of Expenditures of Federal Awards of the city and School District of Philadelphia.

“I’m grateful to Mayor Kenney for his confidence in my ability to fulfill the mission of the Office of the Controller. I look forward to my continued service to Philadelphians and to leading the dedicated staff within the office as we undertake the important work of serving as chief auditor for the city and financial auditor for the School District of Philadelphia, as well as identifying efficiencies and potential cost savings in city government operations,” Brady said. “Working with stakeholders and partners, my No. 1 goal will be to ensure that we’re delivering the most efficient city services, programs and operations with a focus on what’s best for taxpayers and the public.”

Brady is a Certified Public Accountant and a Certified Global Management Accountant. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Accounting from Philadelphia College of Textiles & Science, where she graduated cum laude. She is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, the Pennsylvania Institute of Certified Public Accountants, and the Association of Local Government Auditors.

Brady grew up as Christy Meehan in Olney. She attended St. Ambrose Elementary School until sixth grade, when her family moved to Cheltenham. She graduated from Presentation BVM and Cheltenham High School.

She grew up playing sports for Northeast Optimist (NEO). At Cheltenham, she played softball and on the powerful basketball team. At Textile (now Jefferson University), she played soccer and softball. ••
