Gary Masino, president/business manager of Sheet Metal Workers Local 19 and assistant business manager of the Philadelphia Building Trades Council, announced he is seeking the Democratic nomination in the 10th Councilmanic District.
Republicans have already endorsed Councilman Brian O’Neill.
“I love Northeast Philly. I’ve raised my children here. Our community is not the same as it once was. I have decided to run for City Council because I cannot sit idle any longer. The increase in crime in our community is alarming, and needs to be addressed. Our police departments need to be properly funded, our teachers need to be adequately paid, and our small businesses need the opportunity to thrive,” Masino said.
“Our infrastructure is crumbling, crime is at an all-time high, and our schools need far more support than our local government is providing. I have been tackling tough issues my entire career. My platform is simple: public safety, jobs and education. I want to be the change that Northeast Philly needs.”
Masino represents more than 4,000 sheet metal workers locally and serves as a general vice president of the International Association of Sheet Metal, Air, Rail and Transportation Workers, which represents over 225,000 members in 185 local unions across the United States and Canada.
Masino was appointed to the city Department of Licenses and Inspections’ Board of Appeals in 2012 and to the Zoning Board of Adjustment in 2014. In 2015, Gov. Tom Wolf appointed him to his Transition Committee for Labor and Industry. In 2016, Wolf appointed him to be a commissioner on the Delaware River Port Authority board, where he oversaw the bridges and ports in the tri-state area for three years. In 2018, Wolf nominated him and the Senate unanimously approved him to the Pennsylvania Economic Development Financing Authority board. In 2020, he was appointed to the Pennsylvania Convention Center Board of Directors, and the Senate unanimously appointed him to the Pennsylvania Labor Relations Board.
O’Neill and Masino are both unopposed in the May 16 primary. ••
