National Night Out took place last week across Northeast Philly.
The Aug. 2 celebration in the 8th Police District took place outside the police building at Academy and Red Lion roads, with the 8th Police District Advisory Council helping to organize.
The 15th Police District event was held in the parking lot of the ShopRite at 5597 Tulip St. There was plenty of food, along with a police helicopter flyover and appearances by City Councilman Jim Harrity, state Reps. Jason Dawkins and Joe Hohenstein and city elections commissioner Seth Bluestein.
Also in the 15th, the Tacony Holmesburg Town Watch held an event, with live entertainment, vendors and crafters, military recruiters, appearances by police personnel and Explorers and remarks by City Councilman Mike Driscoll, state Sen. Jimmy Dillon, state Rep. Pat Gallagher and mayoral candidate David Oh.
State Rep. Kevin Boyle organized the outing for the 2nd and 7th police districts. That combined event took place in the Fox Chase Elementary School yard, featuring food, giveaways, crime tips and music by DJ Mark Mroz, community relations officer in the 2nd district. City Council at-large candidates Drew Murray and Jim Hasher and city controller candidate Christy Brady were among those in attendance.
Before that, the 2nd and 7th districts held a leisurely community bike ride, then held a drawing to give away 13 bicycles and helmets. Bikes were donated by the 2nd and 7th Police District Advisory Councils, Fox Chase Civic Association, Fox Chase Town Watch and president Steve Phillips, Take Back Your Neighborhood, Gary Barbera’s on the Boulevard and state Reps. Kevin Boyle and Anthony Bellmon. Fox Chase Lock & Key donated locks and keys.
National Night Out will return on Aug. 6, 2024. ••
