Suspicious death of 93-year-old Lafayette Dailey under investigation in Philadelphia

Philadelphia police are investigating the suspicious death of a 93-year-old man who was found unresponsive inside his home Friday afternoon, a case drawing close attention due to visible injuries and missing personal property. The death occurred inside a residence on the 4500 block of North 16th Street, a residential stretch in the Logan and Nicetown sections of the city that falls within the 35th Police District.

Officers from the Philadelphia Police Department were dispatched to the home at approximately 2:58 p.m. on Friday after receiving a call for a person found unresponsive. According to police, a relative had gone to the residence and discovered the man motionless inside the first-floor area of the house. When officers arrived, they found the victim, described as a 93-year-old Black man, with lacerations to his chest and head. A medical unit responded shortly after and pronounced him dead at 3:05 p.m.

The victim was later identified as Lafayette Dailey. Investigators immediately classified his death as suspicious due to the nature of the injuries. During a search of the home, police located additional bloodstains in an upstairs bedroom, further intensifying concerns about how Dailey died. Authorities noted there were no visible signs of forced entry into the residence.

Police also determined that several of Dailey’s belongings were missing from the home. His wallet, car keys, and vehicle could not be located. The missing vehicle is described as a white 2007 Chrysler 300 with a Pennsylvania license plate number GRJ-5294. The Philadelphia Police Department’s Homicide Unit is actively searching for the car, as investigators believe it may be linked to the circumstances surrounding Dailey’s death.

A spokesperson for the Philadelphia Police Department confirmed that homicide detectives are leading the investigation and continuing to gather information. At this stage, authorities have not released details about suspects or a possible motive, and the case remains active.

Those who knew Dailey described him as a well-liked and respected figure in the neighborhood. His goddaughter, Denene Dancey, spoke about his character and influence, saying he was the best, a man of God, a man’s man, and someone who taught her sons how to be a man. She expressed deep love for him and said she would miss him. Dancey also stated that Dailey did not deserve what happened and that whatever was taken from him, he would have willingly given it if someone had asked for it.

Neighbors shared similar sentiments, describing Dailey as friendly, kind, and approachable. Residents in the area said he regularly greeted people passing by, spoke with neighbors while sitting outside, and kept to himself once he returned indoors. Many in the community described him as someone everyone knew and respected.

Police are urging anyone with information about Lafayette Dailey’s death or the whereabouts of his white 2007 Chrysler 300 with Pennsylvania tag GRJ-5294 to come forward. Investigators have asked the public to contact Detective O’Brien with the Philadelphia Police Homicide Unit at 215-686-3334 or 215-686-3335.
