Two people were arrested and charged after a violent confrontation on New Year’s Day in Northeast Philadelphia escalated into a deadly shootout that killed two men and injured a third. Philadelphia police identified the suspects as Cara Williams-Reeves, 44, and Tyriq Williams, 21, both facing murder and related charges tied to the incident on the 7100 block of Oakland Street.
The shooting occurred at approximately 11:14 a.m. on Thursday, January 1. Officers responding to reports of gunfire arrived at a home on Oakland Street and found Luis Colon suffering from multiple gunshot wounds to the chest. Colon’s age was reported as 51 and 52 in official police accounts. He was transported to Jefferson Torresdale Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 11:55 a.m.
During the initial response, investigators learned that the suspects had fled the scene in a dark-colored Chrysler 300. That same vehicle later arrived at Temple University Hospital carrying two gunshot victims. One was identified as Quadir Tull, 21, who had sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at 11:52 a.m. The second victim, a 21-year-old man, suffered a gunshot wound to his hand and was listed in stable condition.
Police said the shooting stemmed from a confrontation involving Colon’s stepdaughter and relatives of her ex-boyfriend. Williams-Reeves and Tyriq Williams were identified as family members connected to the ex-boyfriend, who was not at the residence at the time. Investigators said the suspects went to Colon’s home to confront the stepdaughter, and the encounter quickly escalated outside the house.
According to police, Williams-Reeves and another unidentified woman allegedly assaulted Colon’s wife and stepdaughter on the front lawn. When Colon attempted to intervene, investigators said Tyriq Williams and Quadir Tull pushed him away. Both men then produced firearms. Colon was also armed, and a shootout erupted between the three men on the residential block.
The gunfire extended beyond the immediate confrontation. Police confirmed that bullets struck a parked vehicle and entered the living room of a nearby home, placing surrounding residents at risk. A nearby resident later described hearing what initially sounded like fireworks, followed by screaming, and seeing Colon lying on the ground as emergency calls were made.
After the shooting, Tyriq Williams was treated at Temple University Hospital for a gunshot wound to his left hand. Police recovered a firearm from him at the hospital. A second firearm was recovered from the scene on Oakland Street.
Authorities filed multiple charges against both suspects. Williams-Reeves was charged with two counts of third-degree murder, two counts of tampering with evidence, two counts of simple assault, two counts of aggravated assault, two counts of conspiracy to aggravated assault, and four counts of recklessly endangering another person. Tyriq Williams was charged with two counts of murder, two counts of conspiracy, two counts of possessing instruments of crime, and two counts of recklessly endangering another person.
The case remains under investigation as police continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the New Year’s Day shooting.
