Burholme Business Association forming
Business owners in Burholme are invited to attend meetings for the newly formed Burholme Business Association.
The first meetings will take place on Thursday, Aug. 28, at Wesley Enhanced Living, at 7040 Oxford Ave.
There will be a breakfast meeting at 7:30 a.m. and a dinner meeting at 6:30 p.m. Admission is free.
Among those in attendance will be state Reps. Brendan Boyle and Kevin Boyle and representatives of the Greater Northeast Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce and Burholme Civic Association. ••
Deadline for Glen Foerd’s Tai Chi is Sept. 1
Tai Chi Along the Delaware starts soon at the Glen Foerd estate and the registration deadline is Sept. 1. Tai chi reduces stress, improves muscle tone and helps control blood pressure. There is no age limit or minimum fitness level.
Instructor Frank Shiery brings 23 years of experience to the program. Participants should wear comfortable loose-fitting clothing and sneakers. Ten sessions will be held Mondays from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. starting Sept. 8. The cost is $150 for the series for non-members or $130 for members. Health center slates open house
The new Center for Medical Excellence at 8015–21 Frankford Ave. in Holmesburg, invites the community to its grand opening open house and inaugural Holmesburg Health Fair on Saturday, Sept. 6, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Families are invited to visit the new medical facility, take a tour, participate in health screenings and more. Children and their parents will enjoy face painting, entertainment, refreshments and prize giveaways. There will also be a shredder, where visitors can destroy their confidential and personal papers (limit of three boxes per household). Shredding starts at 11Â a.m.

Tacony concert series finale is Aug. 28
The Tacony Summer Concert Series will present its season finale on Thursday, Aug. 28, at 7 p.m. at Disston Recreation Center, Disston and Glenloch streets.
The evening will feature Sandbox Rock and Roll Orchestra. Opening the concert will be Giana Lynn, whose debut extended play record Gianre will be released in the fall.
Guests are encouraged to bring lawn chairs.

2nd PDAC to host Community Day Sept. 13
The 2nd Police District Advisory Council’s Community Day will kick off at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 13, with a “Bike Ride for Peace” at the Target store at Bustleton and Bleigh avenues.
Riders will bike through the district’s streets where the most crime occurs with a police escort. Riders will return to the Target parking lot by about 10:30 am. Activities to follow include child fingerprinting, vehicle identification etching, document shredding, and, new this year, an old ammunition turn-in. Old ammunition will be accepted for disposal by police.
Members of the police SWAT, bomb squad, mounted, homeland security, K-9, crime scene and DARE units will be on hand as will fire trucks and fire prevention displays. There will be city, state and federal information tables. ••
Parx to host run on Oct. 11
Parx Casino and Parx Racing at 2999 Street Road in Bensalem will host its third annual Octoberfest 5K Run to benefit the Foundation for Breast and Prostate Health on Saturday, Oct. 11.
FBPH is a Philadelphia-based nonprofit think tank that is highly regarded worldwide in the advancement of breast and prostate cancer research and treatment. In honor of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Parx is dedicated to raising awareness about early detection for breast cancer, along with raising funds to help organizations like FBPH.
On Oct. 11 at 10 a.m., registered runners will set out on the 5K course that travels the perimeter of the casino and racetrack, with the final lap of the race taking place on the same track that thoroughbreds like Smarty Jones have called home for decades. Track announcer Keith Jones will call the home stretch.
Participants may instead opt for the one-mile Fun Walk starting at 9:30 a.m. Both events will be broadcast live on the giant screens in the track’s infield for spectator families and friends to watch and show their support.
Prizes will be awarded to overall place-winners, as well as the top three in each adult and children’s division. Register in advance via www.runtheday.com or in person at 8 a.m. on race day. ••
Twenty-five interns worked at cancer center
Cancer Treatment Centers of America welcomed 25 student interns this summer in a partnership with the Philadelphia Youth Network WorkReady program.
Program participants supported hospital functions such as plant operations, pain management, nursing, oncology clinic, physical therapy, pulmonary, radiology, care management and administration. ••
McIlvain has programs planned
McIlvain Playground, 5200 Penn St. in Frankford, will offer various activities in the fall and winter.
A tot recreation program will be held weekdays from 9 to noon. An after-school program will run weekdays from 3 to 6 p.m. For each program, there’s a $20 registration fee, and the cost is $80 per month.
Hip-hop dance classes will take place for ages 6–14 Tuesday nights at 6:30 and 7:30. Tap and jazz dance classes will take place for ages 3–14 on Tuesday and Thursday nights and Saturday mornings. Classes are $25 per month, in addition to a costume fee.
Zumba classes for adults will take place on Friday nights. The cost is $5 per class.
Tumbling classes will be offered from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. for ages 3–6 on Tuesdays and for ages 6–10 on Thursdays. The fee is $20 per month, in addition to the cost of a body suit.
An in-house instructional soccer program will be available for ages 3–5 on Wednesday nights and Saturday mornings and for ages 6–8 on Thursday nights and Saturday mornings. The cost is $20 and includes a uniform, award and party.
All programs will begin after Labor Day. To register, stop by the playground from 5 to 8Â p.m.

Friends looking for volunteers
The Family Resource Center at Friends Hospital is looking for volunteers.
Persons familiar with mental illness either in the family or in themselves are needed to answer the phone; talk and listen to patients and families; inform persons about support groups, self-help groups, coping skills workshops and other resources; and prepare packets for patients and photocopy materials.
Volunteers must be friendly, upbeat, good listeners. dependable and helpful. Computer skills are a plus.
All volunteers receive orientation and training. Flexible hours are available.
