Times photog earns honors

Northeast Times staff photographer Jenny Swigoda placed first in the National Press Photographers Association’s August Multimedia Contest for her audio slideshow that accompanied an in-depth story about the Philadelphia Veterans Comfort House and the veterans who rely on its services.

Jenny’s story and photo essay, called The War Within, was published in the Times in July. Her self-produced audio slideshow appeared on the Times Web site.

NPPA, with headquarters in Durham, N.C., sponsors the national contest to recognize multimedia projects developed for Web sites.

Another project that Jenny undertook, a story and photo essay about young mothers serving jail time in the Riverside Correctional Facility in Northeast Philadelphia, earned her honorable mention earlier this year in an annual media contest sponsored by the Pennsylvania Newspaper Association. The story Moms Interrupted, a winner in the contest’s investigative reporting category, was published in the Times last December.

Jenny has been with the Times since January 2007. ••
