Local politicians reap the rewards of Super Bowl bets

Betting on the underdogs pays up.

Calling all bets: State Rep. Mike Driscoll won a smorgasbord of Boston goodies, including Melville Candy Lobster Lollipops, Cape Cod Potato Chips, Boston Baked Beans Candy and more.

State Rep. Mike Driscoll and U.S. Sens. Pat Toomey and Bob Casey Jr. last week collected on their Super Bowl-winning bets.

Driscoll bet Massachusetts Rep. William Driscoll, and when the Eagles beat the New England Patriots, 41–33, he received a Cheers tote bag filled with a Blue Hills Reservation Map water bottle, Marshmallow Fluff, Ocean Spray Craisins, Melville Candy Lobster Lollipops, Polar Ginger Ale, Cape Cod Potato Chips, Boston Baked Beans Candy, Dancing Deer Baking Co. Molasses Cookies, Necco wafers and Phillips Chocolates.

Had the Eagles lost, Mike Driscoll would have sent Tastykakes, soft pretzels and Yards beer.

Toomey and Casey placed a friendly wager with Massachusetts Sens. Elizabeth Warren and Ed Markey. The Massachusetts senators delivered beers from Jack’s Abby, Notch, Flying Dreams and Cisco.

Toomey and Casey introduced a resolution to honor the Eagles and their Super Bowl LII championship victory.

Toomey also went to the Senate floor to highlight the momentous occasion.

“The Eagles’ ‘next man up’ mentality was incredible to witness. Over the course of the season, the Eagles lost: a Hall of Fame left tackle, their amazing middle linebacker, the best pound-for-pound player in football and still steamrolled through the NFC with a 13–3 record. However, perhaps in the greatest example of the ‘next man up’ mentality in NFL history, Nick Foles took over for Carson Wentz at quarterback when Wentz was lost late in the season…the fact that Nick Foles stepped in and was able to guide the team to the Super Bowl is the stuff legends are made of.” ••
