City Councilwoman Cherelle Parker delivered a budget briefing and invited vendors to last week’s Lawncrest Community Association meeting.
During her remarks, Parker promised a new building at Lawncrest Recreation Center, Rising Sun Avenue and Comly Street, that will include a track.
Sheriff Jewell Williams was among those in attendance. His office handed out free gun locks, as did 2nd Police District community relations officer Mark Mroz. Mroz also distributed neighborhood surveys on public safety.
In other news from the April 16 meeting:
• The Philadelphia Protestant Home was honored as Business of the Month.
• Crescentville United Methodist Church, 412 Sentner St., will host Unmentionables Tea on Sunday, April 28, at 1:30 p.m. The afternoon will feature tea and fashions for the land down under and the history of undergarments from the Victorian era to the 1950s. • U.S. Rep. Brendan Boyle will sponsor two upcoming senior expos. The first will take place on Saturday, May 18, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Esperanza Academy Charter School, 301 W. Hunting Park Ave. The second is set for Saturday, June 15, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Abraham Lincoln High School, 3201 Ryan Ave. The events will include health screenings, more than 100 vendors and a light lunch. • The Lawncrest Recreation Center Advisory Council will sponsor free movie nights on the center’s outdoor stage on the following Thursdays: June 20, July 18, Aug. 15, Sept. 19 and Oct. 17. The movies will begin at dusk. Bring a chair or blanket.
• The Lawncrest Community Association will meet again on Tuesday, May 14, at 7 p.m. at St. William parish hall, Argyle and Robbins streets. The group usually meets on the third Tuesday of the month, but May 21 is the primary election. ••
